LOL Glitter Doll Tutorial

If you're a mom of a young girl, you probably have already spent $100 on LOL Dolls and Pets and Little Sisters. While they are indeed very cute, and I must admit they are also one of te recent fads that my daughter doesn't only collect, but plays with, they are WAY OVERPRICED.

And worse is if you end up with a duplicate. The disappointment is crazy. So I offered a solution to my 6 year old to spruce up her recent duplicate LOL doll and turn her into a glitter version of the same doll.

You won't believe how EASY this was to do!

Difficulty: Easy.
Materials:
any doll or plastic toy
embossing glitter powder (I used StampN Stuff
acrylic paint to match the embossing glitter or match the doll

Tools:
paint brush
heat gun or hairdryer

Directions:
1) Decide what section/s you will add glitter and paint that section. We are using the paint only as a form of glue to hold the glitter in place prior to heating it so you must be able to apply the glitter before the paint dries. If the area is large, do in sections.
Here, I painted the cap pink, over the actual pink cap.

2) Apply the glitter. Sprinkle the glitter onto the piece, coating all wet areas. Be sure to place a piece of paper below to capture the excess glitter. Then you may return that glitter to the bottle so you don't waste it.

 3) Depending on the complexity of the project, ie: how many different glitters you are applying, you may choose to heat each section before moving on to the next. I say this because if you add a second glitter to a section before heating the first glitter, you run the risk of mixing your glitters together and that might not be what you want. You also want to make sure that any loose glitter is brushed away. I used a dry paintbrush to brush away loose unwanted glitter.

4) Using your heat gun or hair dryer, carefully, and slowly heat the glitter. It will begin to melt but WATCH OUT, your toy is ALSO plastic and it too WILL MELT if you heat for too long!

Once you see the glitter sparkle, you will know your piece is done. BE CAREFUL! It's HOT! The plastic toy will hold the heat! You may run it under cold water to quickly cool it, or just leave it to cool naturally.

That's it. You are done. The glitter will not come off.
Completed new glitter doll.

Lesson: I heated the clothing too long and they shrunk. Also I heated the hat too long and the small bumps that were on the visor to hold it in place on the dolls head, were melted into the visor. You cannot tell but the visor does not fit snugly anymore. My daughter didn't notice cuz the visor sits well enough.
Melted nubs that held visor to head.
